Any new and abnormal growth (also called tumor); specifically a new growth of tissue in which the growth is uncontrolled and progressive. The word neoplasm is not synonymous with cancer. A neoplasm may be benign or malignant. Malignant neoplasms are distinguished from benign in that the former show a greater degree of anaplasia (a loss of differentiation of cells and of their orientation to one another) and have the properties of invasion and metastasis.
